Are You a Champion for Mental Health in the Workplace?

Business man sitting on table and ceep calm in meditation relax. Office workers stressing and hurry up with deadline. Fun cartoon characters. Vector illuctration of job situation in office interior.

Nearly 75% of employees say they want their employers to champion mental health and well-being in the workplace. This is rated as more important than equality (48%), sustainability (38%) and diversity (31%) according to a survey of office workers in July 2018 from Peldon Rose and this is the case for ALL generations, who prioritize mental health and well-being above all other causes – Gen Z (76%), Millennials (73%), Gen X (75%), Baby Boomer (56%).

Approximately 80% of adults with depression reported at least some difficulty with work, home, or social activities because of their depression symptoms according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health Advocate reports that “Lifestyle factors, such as stress, cost US business over $300 Billion annually in lost productivity, absenteeism, employee turnover, medical costs and more.”

A company’s culture plays an important role in the mental health of employees.  According to Gallup, Negative organizational cultures have an 18% lower productivity rate and disengaged employees have a 37% absenteeism rate.

Author Gayle van Gils, in her book “Happier at Work” explains “Today’s workplaces can only thrive if we discover and implement strategies that reduce and manage stress and encourage flexible thinking and open communication, allowing businesses to prosper in these times of uncertainty, global competition, resource depletion, and an ever-growing knowledge economy.”

Organizations experience higher performance when their employees are happy and employers have begun to take action by providing training and resources for their staff to help increase mental health awareness, encourage work-life balance, and implement mindfulness practices at work.
