Want to help your employees to make a shift in their eating and overall health? Everyone knows that what you eat is important for body and mind. Consider changing the culture in your business to Wellness in the Workplace. Start with baby steps. Here are some ideas of incorporating a Corporate Wellness Program into the Workplace, starting with nutrition.
Lunch ‘n Learn Series
In most offices around America, employers have the opportunity to influence one meal – lunch because their employees are usually in the office (unless you have a substantial sales staff).
Hold a luncheon one a week, month, or quarter for your staff in the office and bring in a Wellness Coach to discuss a variety of subjects to help your employees reach their wellness goals. Each meeting could have a different topic, or you can do follow-ups to keep people on track.
Hold cooking classes for your staff. This is a wonderful wellness initiative that will help an employee learn how to eat healthy both at work and at home. A company can bring in a dietitian or nutritionist during the lunch hour to demonstrate how to prepare simple, healthy meals and provide some suggestions on how to fit cooking into their busy work schedule.
Poll your staff and find out what goals they have and set up meetings around these subjects. Also, you can ask individuals if they have issues such as diabetes, cardiac issues, etc. and have specific meetings or teachings to help these employees.
Health Education
One of the MOST important wellness initiatives in the workplace is education. This initiative can start with educating employees about the relationships between disease and their diet. Teach about healthy nutrition, food label reading, portion control, and identifying healthy choices, to name a few. Everyone needs a gentle reminder in this fast-paced environment to stay on course with healthy eating.
Nutritionist on Call
Bring in a nutritionist to help people start to change their eating habits by educating them first. Employees can meet with a nutritionist, establish goals, do follow-up meetings, or be available on call as needed.
Weight Loss Challenge
Hold a weight loss challenge in the office and make it a team building activity where the entire office participates in supporting each other. Even the healthy individuals that do not have any weight to lose can be cheerleaders or check-in points of contact to support the others. Make it fun and healthy. Everyone can be a winner – employees and the business because wellness will help your statistics in the workplace.
Include body composition screenings or at least discuss the BMI and other important indicators of health.
Encourage Physical Exercise
Happier employees can improve workplace morale and longevity. Income is not the only reason an employee stays at a job.
There are many ways an employer can turn the office into an active workplace. Here are some ideas:
- Encouraging employees to walk / bike to work (if it is possible)
- Start a walking club in the morning before work or during lunchtime
- During a short break, walk around the office
- Walk stairs instead of taking the elevator
- Park farther away and walk to the building
Breakfast Meetings
You also have another opportunity to shift your corporate culture. If you hold morning meetings with food, bring in healthier options?
Lead the charge. Bring in healthy meals for meetings, snack, breakroom, monthly luncheon treat. Take the first step to help you and your employees.
